Is Santa Fe Opera worth it?
Santa Fe Opera is for anyone who wants opera and a desert sunset in one evening; in July the curtain rises right at sundown. Turandot has the most dates and is the easiest way in. On a budget, take a $15 standing place or a Family Night.
Before you go
What should I know before an evening in Santa Fe?
Your seat is under the roof, but wind and rain can blow in from the open sides. The opera warns that evenings can be cool, rainy, humid or hot, and that temperatures can change a lot during a show. Bring a jacket, a blanket and an umbrella.
„open on three sides, allowing visitors to enjoy performances complemented by the elements“
In the organiser's words sourceThe parking lot opens three hours before curtain. The opera recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before the start to avoid traffic.
From the UK you usually fly with one connection to Albuquerque (ABQ), New Mexico's largest city, then drive north to Santa Fe; from within the US, Albuquerque and the small Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) are both options. The opera sits seven miles north of the Santa Fe Plaza on US Highway 84/285, exit 168 (Tesuque Village/Opera Drive).
Operas finish late at night. The company runs round-trip shuttles from several pick-up points in Santa Fe, which you book in advance. If you drive, expect a queue leaving the lot.
Parking is free in lighted lots next to the theater.
There is no dress code, though many guests dress up. A warm jacket matters more than elegance, because the hilltop cools down sharply at night.
Children under six are not admitted to evening performances. From age six, Family Nights offer reduced tickets.
There is no lawn at Santa Fe Opera. The picnic happens in the parking lot instead, a local tradition called tailgating. You may set up a small table and chairs next to your car, and a few picnic tables beside the lots are first come, first served. No fire of any kind is allowed, so no charcoal, gas, propane or candles, and no generators. Everyone in your party needs a ticket for that night. Inside the theater only bottled water is allowed; large bags and picnic baskets stay in the car. The opera's pages do not spell out a rule on bringing your own wine to a tailgate; wine and cocktails are sold at several bars before the show and at intermission.
