Is Vienna Opera Summer at Heumarkt worth it?
The Vienna Opera Summer is the only open-air opera in central Vienna, two minutes from an underground station. Tickets cost more than in Verona, but the arena is smaller and you sit closer to the stage. If you are in Vienna in July anyway, this is a big opera night without a long journey.
Before you go
What should I know before an evening in Vienna?
The performance goes ahead in any weather. The organisers only cancel when there is an official severe weather warning, and then you get your money back. In changeable weather the start can be delayed or the performance paused. Separate rules apply to the opening night on 30 June 2027, set out in the ticket shop terms.
„Der Wiener Opernsommer ist eine Open-Air Veranstaltung und findet prinzipiell bei jedem Wetter statt.“

From the UK most people fly to Vienna Airport. The City Airport Train and the S7 suburban train run to Wien Mitte station, and from there it is a 15-minute walk along the Stadtpark to the arena. The nearest underground station is Stadtpark on line U4, two minutes on foot.
The performance ends by 11 pm at the latest. Underground line U4 and trams D, 2 and 71 are still running then, and on Friday and Saturday nights the underground runs all night.
The organisers recommend public transport. If you come by car there are public car parks nearby. Street parking is short-stay only.
There is no dress code. Bring a light jacket or a blanket, because evenings can turn cool and there are mosquitoes. If rain is forecast, wear warm waterproof clothes and sturdy shoes.
Children are welcome from the age of five. School pupils get 30 per cent off in categories A to E. The performance lasts about three hours including the interval and ends around 11 pm.
You cannot take glasses to your seat. Food and drink are available from 6 pm and in the interval, which starts after about an hour and lasts 30 minutes. Blankets and seat cushions are sold on site.
