Tanglewood is perfect for families and for anyone who wants a world-class orchestra with a relaxed picnic. The lawn is cheap and free for under-18s; if you want the best sound and a dry seat, buy a Shed ticket.
Before you go
What should I know before an evening in Lenox?
All concerts happen rain or shine. With a lawn ticket you cannot shelter in the Shed, and there are no refunds for bad weather.
„The Shed is ticketed separately from the Lawn and is not a rain shelter for guests with Lawn tickets.“
In the organiser's words sourceThe BSO does not publish gate times. A visitor guide suggests arriving at least an hour early. Every gate has metal detectors and bag checks.
From the UK you fly to Boston (BOS) or New York; from either city Tanglewood is about two and a half hours by car, according to a visitor guide. If you live in the US, Albany (ALB) is a closer regional airport. A rental car is the practical choice, as public transport in the Berkshires is thin.
After the concert everyone leaves at once, so allow time or linger on the lawn for a while.
A visitor guide says parking is included with many tickets; check current rules on the BSO site.
There is no dress code. Bring a warm layer, as the lawn cools down after sunset.
Children are very welcome on the lawn, and under-18s get in free there. Children under five are not allowed in the Shed during concerts.
You are welcome to bring a picnic. Drinks must be in non-glass containers. Alcohol is not banned, but the BSO expects you to drink responsibly and intoxication is not tolerated. Tents and open-sided canopies are prohibited on the lawn. Umbrellas may be at most six feet across, must stand upright and must come down at sunset unless it rains. Grilling, cooking and open flames are not allowed, nor are pets other than service dogs, smoking or playing your own music. Most people bring low chairs and blankets.
