Is La Roque-d'Anthéron International Piano Festival worth it?

This festival is all about the piano, and many of the world's finest pianists play in this park every summer. For piano lovers it is one of Europe's loveliest open-air venues, and tickets are cheap if you are under 30. If you want staged opera, look elsewhere, and without a car or a booked shuttle, getting home at night is tricky.

Before you go

What should I know before an evening in La Roque-d'Anthéron?

If it rains

The festival rarely cancels for bad weather, and it always decides at the last moment. Umbrellas are banned in the park because they block other people's view and are dangerous on the stand, so bring a rain jacket instead. If the festival cancels a concert, you can swap your ticket for another date or get a refund.

„En cas d’intempéries, les décisions d’annulation sont rares et se font toujours au dernier moment.“

You can take your seat from 30 minutes before the concert starts. The festival square with food stalls, called la Placette, usually opens two hours before the evening concert. Bags are checked at the entrance, so it is worth arriving early.

Getting there

La Roque-d'Anthéron is a small village in Provence, not far from the city of Aix-en-Provence. If you fly from the UK, Marseille Provence Airport is the nearest big airport, and Aix-en-Provence TGV station is 40 kilometres from the festival. For evening concerts the festival runs a return shuttle bus from central Aix for 6 euros, which you must book in advance. It leaves 1 hour 15 minutes before the concert from outside the Renaissance hotel at 256 avenue de Pérouse. A hire car gives you the most freedom, and the guarded festival car park is reached via the RD23 road.

Getting home afterwards

Evening concerts usually start at 9 pm, so you head home late at night. Check the regional Zou! journey planner beforehand to see whether any bus still runs that late. The easiest way back to Aix-en-Provence is the festival's pre-booked shuttle bus, or your own car. The festival website also has a free car-sharing board.

Parking

There is a dedicated festival car park north of the grounds for every concert in the park, guarded during concerts and reached via the RD23 road. More parking is available in the village. Disabled visitors can reserve a space in a separate car park inside the park using an online form.

Children

At concerts with the family tariff, marked as tariff F, under-18s go free with every full-price adult ticket. Under-16s may only attend evening concerts with an adult. For children under 4, ask the box office before you buy.

What you can bring

You may bring a picnic. Dedicated picnic areas open 90 minutes before every evening concert, and there are drinking-water fountains. Glass bottles, metal cutlery, bottles over 50 cl and umbrellas are not allowed. Backpacks over 25 litres and suitcases must stay outside too.
