Is Aida on Sydney Harbour worth it?
Aida on Sydney Harbour is worth it if you are in Sydney anyway and want a big show with fireworks, harbour views and a sunset. It is not usually a reason on its own to fly to Australia. With no roof, pack rain gear and pick a date early in your stay in case of bad weather.
Before you go
What should I know before an evening in Sydney?
Neither the stage nor the seating has a roof, and the show goes on in almost any weather. Opera Australia only cancels for electrical storms within 10 km or extremely high winds or rain, and never before 7.30pm. The start may be delayed and the show may pause for up to 50 minutes. Umbrellas are allowed on site but not during the performance; ponchos are sold at the venue.
„The venue, audience seating, and the stage are completely uncovered.“
In the organiser's words sourceThe site opens at 5pm and the show starts at 7.30pm. Selected drinks cost from A$10 at the main bars between 5 and 6pm, so you can eat and watch the sunset over the harbour.
From the UK you fly to Sydney with at least one stop. In Sydney the nearest stations are St James (about a 16-minute walk) and Martin Place (about 18 minutes). Walking through the Royal Botanic Garden is quicker, but the gates close at 6.30pm in March and 6pm in April. Water taxis run between 5pm and 7.30pm from Man O'War Jetty by the Opera House to Woolloomooloo, five minutes' walk from the venue, for A$20 each way.
The show runs about 2 hours 40 minutes with one interval, so it ends around 10.10pm if nothing is paused. The Botanic Garden is closed by then, so walk round to St James station by road. If you booked a water taxi, it takes you back to Man O'War Jetty. Art Gallery Road gets congested after the show, so arrange pick-ups elsewhere.
The closest car park is the Domain Car Park, a 10–12 minute walk away. It is open 24 hours with Mobility Parking Scheme spaces on the ground floor. There is metered parking on Mrs Macquaries Road, Hospital Road and Macquarie Street, but Opera Australia advises avoiding Mrs Macquaries Road because of congestion.
There is no dress code. Wear sensible shoes, because you will climb stairs in the grandstand, and bring warm, waterproof layers, as Sydney weather changes quickly.
Every child needs their own ticket, including babies. Opera Australia gives no age recommendation. There is no dedicated parents' room, but the box office team will help if you ask.
Don't bring a picnic: only food and drink bought on site is allowed, and there are five bars and restaurants. Umbrellas can come in but cannot be used during the show, so pack a warm layer and a rain jacket.
