Is operklosterneuburg in the Kaiserhof worth it?
operklosterneuburg is a good choice if you are visiting Vienna and want a summer evening of music in a grand abbey courtyard. The singers perform without amplification because the courtyard has excellent acoustics, and Die Fledermaus, with its famous waltzes, is easy to enjoy even if you are new to opera. If it rains, the evening may move into a hall that has less atmosphere than the courtyard.
Before you go
What should I know before an evening in Klosterneuburg near Vienna?
The performance goes ahead in any weather. In light drizzle the team stretches a cover over the orchestra and keeps playing in the courtyard. In heavier rain the show moves to the Babenbergerhalle, a hall about 200 metres away on the town hall square, and this can happen even during the performance. The decision is often made only up to half an hour before the start, so always go to the courtyard first. Your ticket is also valid in the hall.
„Bei Regen kann die Veranstaltung auch kurzfristig in die Babenbergerhalle verlegt werden. Ihre Karten behalten auch indoor ihre Gültigkeit!“
In the organiser's words sourceThe food and drink stands on the abbey square open at 6.30 pm. The organisers do not give an exact time for entry to the seating.
Klosterneuburg sits right on the northern edge of Vienna. Fly to Vienna, get into the city, and take the underground line U4 to Heiligenstadt. From there bus 400 or 402 takes you to the Klosterneuburg Stiftsgarten stop, followed by a walk of about 5 minutes. The organisers recommend this bus, because the railway line can be partly closed in summer.
After the performance you take bus 400 or 402 back to Heiligenstadt underground station in Vienna. Check the timetable beforehand for the last bus, because the show ends late in the evening.
Parking on the town hall square is free from 6 pm. Car parks P2 by the wine shop and P3 on Albrechtsbergergasse charge a fee, but you can validate your ticket in the passage to the courtyard for a reduced 10 euros, valid for 6 hours. Do not use the abbey garage P1, because its lift stops running after 6 pm.
The organisers ask you to bring warm clothes and a blanket if the evening is cool. They do not set a dress code.
On Sunday 18 July 2027 at 6 pm there is a special version for children called Die Fledermaus für Kids. A presenter explains the story, and the full cast sings with the whole orchestra.
On a cool evening bring warm clothes and a blanket. If the weather looks uncertain, a rain jacket helps in case of light drizzle while the show continues in the courtyard.
