Is Oper Burg Gars (Gars Castle Opera) worth it?
Oper Burg Gars is ideal if you want grand opera without amplification in a real castle ruin, at prices well below Verona or Bregenz. La Bohème, with its love story and famous tunes, is a good first opera. The castle is in the countryside, so plan your way home after 11 pm carefully, or go on one of the three evenings with the opera coach from Vienna.

In the organiser's words sourceThe castle grounds open at 6 pm. Entry to the seating stand starts 30 minutes before the show, at 7.30 pm.
Gars am Kamp lies in the valley of the river Kamp, north-west of Vienna. Fly to Vienna and either hire a car or take the train to Gars-Thunau station. From 6 pm a free shuttle bus runs from the station, and from the foot of the castle hill at Bio-Schober, up to the castle. On three evenings, 10, 24 and 31 July 2027, the opera runs its own coach from Schwedenplatz in central Vienna for 35 euros return, leaving at 5 pm.
The show ends at about 11 pm. The free shuttle only goes up the hill; for a ride down you have to agree the route and price with the driver yourself. Walking down to the village centre takes about 10 minutes. Check the Austrian rail timetable (ÖBB) beforehand to see whether a train still runs after 11 pm. On three evenings the opera coach takes you straight back to Vienna after the show.
According to the organisers there is plenty of parking at Gars-Thunau station, and the free shuttle bus leaves from there. Guests with limited mobility can request a parking space right at the castle through the box office.
Come dressed however you feel comfortable. Many guests like to dress up, but it can get cool at the castle in the evening.
Children up to 12 pay half price. On the Tuesdays 13, 20 and 27 July 2027 the festival director invites children aged 6 and over to a free backstage tour at 6.30 pm. Book the tour in advance with the box office.
Bring warm clothes and, if the weather looks uncertain, rain protection. Umbrellas, glass bottles, glasses and animals are not allowed on the stand; only assistance dogs may come. At the food truck on the castle grounds you can only pay in cash.
