Is Heidenheim Opera Festival worth it?

The Heidenheim Opera Festival suits you if you want high-quality opera in a real castle ruin and do not mind a possible move indoors. For Lohengrin in 2027, even in perfect weather you watch Act 1 indoors. The purest open-air experience in 2027 is the two Last Night concerts.

Before you go

What should I know before an evening in Heidenheim an der Brenz?

If it rains

Two hours before each performance the festival decides whether it plays outdoors in the Rittersaal or indoors in the Festspielhaus CCH. You can see the decision on the festival homepage and by a flag on the castle tower, and hear it on +49 7321 327 4220. If the flag is flying, the show is outdoors. The festival also moves indoors if the forecast is below 17 °C for the end of the show. If a Rittersaal performance has to be stopped, there is no refund.

„Die Entscheidung, ob die Veranstaltungen OUTDOOR oder INDOOR stattfinden können, finden Sie hier jeweils 2 Stunden vor Beginn der Veranstaltung.“

What you can bring

In the Rittersaal you sit outdoors on a grandstand. With the FestspielCARD, the festival's discount card, you can borrow a seat cushion there without a rental fee, against a deposit. Guests in the top category, called Loge, get a cushion included.
