Opening night is 22 July 2027 at 9.15 pm and the last performance is on 23 August 2027. In July the opera starts at 9.15 pm, in August at 9 pm. It lasts two hours with no interval. The festival also stages Othmar Schoeck's opera Penthesilea in the Festspielhaus, the indoor theatre right next to the lake stage, but that is not an open-air show.

Is Bregenz Festival on the Lake Stage worth it?

The lake stage is worth it mainly for the enormous set in the water, which you can see from every seat. If you worry about rain, buy Category 1plus, 1 or 2, because only those tickets move indoors. On a smaller budget, Category 3 at the front by the shore or Category 4 at the side are good choices, and weeknights cost clearly less than Saturdays.

Before you go

What should I know before an evening in Bregenz?

If it rains

The festival plays in the rain whenever it can and only decides shortly before the start. From one hour before, announcements keep you informed. If the show is cancelled or stops before 90 minutes, only some tickets move indoors. The so-called house tickets in categories 1plus, 1 and 2, plus Premium and Lounge, then let you see a semi-staged version in the Festspielhaus. Semi-staged means the singers still act out their roles, but without the huge lake set. These house tickets are not refunded. Categories 1 and 1plus then sit in the stalls, category 2, Premium and Lounge in the balcony. Seats next to each other outside may be separated inside. Lake tickets in categories 3 to 8 are valid outdoors only. If the performance lasts less than 60 minutes, you get your money back or can swap to another evening if seats are available.

„Karten der Kategorie 3 bis 8 gelten ausschließlich für die Seebühne.“

Doors

The lakeside grandstand opens one hour before the start. Weather or the running order can shift this time. Latecomers are only let in during a break or with an usher, and La traviata has no interval.

Getting there

Bregenz sits on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, in the far west of Austria, close to the German and Swiss borders. From the UK, the easiest airport is usually Zurich. From Zurich trains run to Bregenz via St. Gallen. Bregenz station is about a ten-minute walk from the Festspielhaus and the lake stage.

Getting home afterwards

The opera runs two hours without an interval, so it ends around 11.15 pm in July and around 11 pm in August, unless the weather causes a delay. Bregenz station is about ten minutes' walk away. During the festival, extra buses leave after the show, for example into the Bregenzerwald hills and to Scheidegg in Germany.

Parking

Bregenz has several large paid car parks, all within about 15 minutes' walk of the lake stage.

What to wear

There is no dress code. Because the show goes on in the rain, wear warm, waterproof clothes. Umbrellas are not welcome on the stand because they block other people's view.

Children

Children aged 6 and over may attend, and they need ID to prove their age. Every child needs their own ticket. Pupils and students up to 26 get a discount in categories 3 to 8.

What you can bring

You may bring seat cushions, blankets and drinking bottles up to one litre, as long as they are not glass. Your own food, glasses and glass bottles are not allowed. Space on the stand is tight, and there is nowhere to leave luggage in the Festspielhaus.
