Is Arena di Verona worth it?

The Arena di Verona is the biggest and best-known open-air opera stage. First-timers on a budget should sit on the stone steps (sectors 4–6): you get the full sweep of the amphitheatre from €35, but bring a cushion. If you want to see the singers up close, choose a stalls armchair; families do best in the family area near the stage, where children pay €2.50.

Before you go

What should I know before an evening in Verona?

If it rains

The Arena never cancels in advance; in bad weather it can push the start back by up to 150 minutes. If the show is stopped before the end of the first act, you can buy a ticket for another performance this season (chosen by the Arena) for €2.50. If it is stopped after the first act, you get 30% off another performance. There is no refund once the show has started. After 15 August the replacement also applies to next year's festival.

„Fondazione Arena di Verona può posticipare fino a 150 minuti l’orario d’inizio della rappresentazione.“

Getting there

Verona's Valerio Catullo airport at Villafranca is about 10 km south-west of the city; a shuttle bus runs to Verona Porta Nuova station, and from there buses 11, 12, 13, 51 and 52 (evenings 90–98) stop at Piazza Bra in front of the Arena. If you fly into Venice or Milan instead, high-speed trains take about 1 hr 10 min from Venezia and 1 hr 20 min from Milano.

Getting home afterwards

Shows often finish after midnight; the 1913 Aida, for example, runs about 3 hrs 40 min. After every performance a free shuttle goes from Piazzetta Municipio (behind the town hall) to the Park Centro car park. The Opera Bus to Lake Garda leaves 30 minutes after the end and must be booked online in advance. Evening buses 90–98 run to the station.

Parking

The Arena recommends the Saba car parks (Parcheggio Arena at Via Bentegodi 8, Arsenale, Isolo and Polo Zanotto). Book online in advance and your space is guaranteed even when the car park is full. From Park Centro a free shuttle runs back after the show.

What to wear

There is no compulsory dress code. In the stalls smart clothes are preferred, and men may not wear shorts, vests or flip-flops there.

Children

Under-14s must be with an adult. Children under 4 are only allowed in the Poltrona Tribuna Family area, where children up to 14 pay €2.50. Bear in mind that shows start late and often end after midnight.

What you can bring

A small backpack and a small umbrella without a sharp tip are fine. Bags over 17 litres, suitcases, food and drink, glass and plastic bottles over 0.5 litres are not allowed, and nor are cameras. There is no cloakroom. On the stone steps you can bring a cushion or buy one inside.
